We’re dedicating new Siddurim on the first day of Shavuot. In honor of this wonderful occasion, we’re using the counting of the Omer to learn about the siddur.

Enjoy today’s siddur related question and answer, which was provided by Harris L..

Why does the siddur go from right to left?

Hebrew may be written from right to left because in ancient times when chiseling out words on a stone tablet, the engraver would hold the hammer in his dominant hand (usually the right hand) and the chisel in the left hand, making it easier to write from right to left. But as writing tools began to develop, methods like inkjet on parchment or a stylus on clay led to scribes writing from left to right so they wouldn’t smudge the letters. However, by the time this happened, Hebrew and other Semitic languages were already in “Set in stone,” so to speak, so they continued to be written from right to left.
