Book Club: Bread Givers

Sunday, February 27th, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM (online). Bread Givers is a 1925 novel by Jewish-American author Anzia Yezierska. This masterwork of American immigrant literature is set in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and tells the story of Sara Smolinsky, the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi, who rebels against her father’s rigid conception of Jewish womanhood. Discussion led by Debbie Ann Doyle.

Another Promised Land?

Wednesday, February 9th, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM (online). Using rare archival materials from the collections in the Houston Jewish History Archive, this talk will highlight many of the core themes in Southern Jewish history — immigration, adaptation, socioeconomic mobility, and race relations — from a Texan perspective. Co-sponsored with the Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies.
