February 2009 Message from Janice Kimmelman:
As it is already the middle of February, we are managing winter well. The children have been able to grab opportunities to spend time outdoors in the playground or the outdoor classroom. The outdoor classroom has offered many interesting occasions for learning as we watch how the changes of the seasons affect the environment. Discovering ice, feeling how hard the ground is to dig in, seeing what has happened to our plants, and noticing the lack of insects and colors; are all prospects for additional language and learning events. We hope the weather continues to cooperate and that we may have the chance to view the process of the changes first hand of winter to spring. Get ready for mud!!!!
During the past month, we have celebrated various events. Samara Weinstein was the impetus behind arranging a valuable workshop to parents in order to share and prepare when making decisions about kindergarten. Thank you Samara for providing this.
The children marched in our Lunar New Year parade along with music and their creations ranging from ox to dragons. Stomping on the bubble wrap to simulate firecrackers is always the grand finale. Many children participated in the Lunar New Year Lunch. The crunchy noodles were voted most tasty.
For Tu B’Shevat, the children entered the social hall to find decorations and parents waiting to participate in the seder. Thank you to the many parents who give their time making these events run smoothly. It takes time to set each plate and make certain the room and activities are ready. As Hillary Clinton said,
taken from the African proverb, "it takes a village to raise a child". Morah Robin & Morah Laura spent much time creating the information sheets to follow along at the seder as well as planning activities for the children following the feast of delicious foods.
We had a record turn out for the Teddy Bear Lunch Day and dressing in pajamas is always a hit. The Lunch Bunch Plus classes are going well. Hebrew, Karate, and Yoga have hopefully given children the variety of cognitive, emotional and social enrichments they take pleasure in. Due to missing a Karate class on Jan. 28th because of snow, there will be a make-up class on Wednesday, April 1st.
Looking ahead, each Morah is planning time to hold the second Parent/Teacher Conference, preparation is underway in anticipation of Purim with celebrations on March 10th & 11th and Passover celebrations will be March 30th and 31st. Spring is coming!
